Listening to Your Inner Voice

Please, do feel bad about your balance or the need to justify it!

Only you know if what you are doing is serving you or if it’s a cop out. Last night, I stayed up until 1 a.m. to work on my website, which initially may sound like procrastination or a random panic-induced second wind. But it was neither. I worked my day job, then cleaned my apartment a little before making deal with myself - I would order healthy takeout and clean while I waited, and once it was delivered, the rest of the night was mine and I could relax. I ate and watched a movie (which I rarely do because I prefer to read and learn something) and even though I knew better, ended up overeating while I watched the movie.

Yes, even wellness coaches make mistakes.

I started to get frustrated with myself and became very determined to meet or beat my deadlines for starting this business. I wanted to get to the rewarding aspect: coaching. Long story short, I felt lethargic and unenthused from overeating, but stopped making excuses, mentally hyped myself up and blew through my tasks. My writing flowed and I made significant progress, eventually stopping only so I wouldn’t catastrophically alter my sleep schedule.

This was my balance - I got yummy take out, I cleaned, I relaxed and watched part of a movie and by surpassing my expectations, I not only checked major items off my to do list, but I worked hard and was proud of myself. We all seek others’ approval to some level, but genuine self approval is a uniquely special feeling. Human beings aren’t perfect, of course, so complete balance is hard to achieve without surrendering imperfections and accepting some loss of control, however, even in light of that I feel pretty darn close to balanced.
